Permission to reuse images and tables

Permission from the author of the article is not usually required. Permission from JBJS or an approved agent of JBJS is always required.

Non-profit and non-commercial permission

A license from JBJS or our agent, Rightslink, is required for the following:

  • Use JBJS content in an academic book or a journal article
  • Use in an academic dissertation or thesis
  • Use in a presentation, such as Powerpoint™ slides or handouts, at an academic lecture
  • Use in a CME course that has no commercial sponsorship

Commercial permission

A license from JBJS or our agent, ©ROCKWATER, Inc., is required for all commercial uses, including:

  • Use in promotional literature
  • Use in a product manual
  • Use in a presentation, such as Powerpoint™
  • Slides or handouts, at a commercially sponsored lecture
  • Use in a commercially sponsored CME course

How do I obtain a license to use the material for a non-profit and/or non-commercial purpose?

Most non-commercial requests to use JBJS images or tables are now handled online through our partnership with Copyright Clearance Center's Rightslink® service.

On the JBJS website, find the article of interest by searching using the search box or in the JBJS contents list for the correct month and year (click on Archive in the navigation bar for a complete list).

Then click on [Reprints and Permissions] next to the citation.

This page will appear. Click on Rightslink. [this click should bring up the populated Rightslink box]

The Rightslink order form appears as a pop-up. If you have a pop-up blocker on the computer you are using, you will need to disable it; often this is done by pressing the Control key while clicking on the link.

On the Rightslink screen, pick the desired use from the drop-down box ("use content in printed medical journal or textbook"), and enter a number corresponding to the number of figures or tables you want to reuse (not the number of books or journals to be printed).

You will need to set up a Rightslink account to receive a password. The account needs to be set up only once, and having an account does NOT mean you will be charged a fee for the permission.

E-Prints

Requests for non-commercial and commercial e-prints are handled through ©ROCKWATER. Please see How do I order reprints or eprints or obtain a license to use the material?

An e-print is delivered as an URL to a security-wrapped e-print residing on an external server. A specified (or unlimited) number of unique computers may access, download, unzip and save the e-print where it may then be printed once and viewed an unlimited number of times by each computer to which an authorized download has been made. E-prints are suitable for publication to an Internet or internet site, for emailing to others, for localized on-demand literature fulfillment, and for download to USB or flash-drives.

Note: JBJS Inc. and its agent(s) are not responsible for compliance of reprint and e-print buyers with FDA "Good Reprint Practices" or with PhRMA's "Code on Interactions with Healthcare Professionals." Compliance with these and other policies, laws, or guidelines are strictly the responsibility of the user of the material.
